Black toenail fungus is a type of toenail fungus named as such because it is characterized by having dark brown to black toenails. It is distinguished from other types of toenail fungus which is characterized by having whitish or yellowish toenails.
The discoloration of the nails is actually the beginning symptoms of toenail fungus. At this stage, the infected person does not feel any pain yet. This is the reason why it is very easy to dismiss the disease as nothing more than a passing condition. The disease only gets noticed when it is in the latter stages already and when discomfort and pain is already present.
There are many commercially available overt-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications for toenail fungus. They come in either topical or oral form. As a general rule of thumb, oral medicines are given to people with advanced cases of toenail fungus. Conventional medicines are largely effective in treating toenail fungus. The problem is, some of these medicines have adverse side effects that range from allergic reactions to nausea and stomach ache. Prolonged use of medicines can also lead to liver or kidney damage.
Black toenail fungus or any type of fungus for that matter can be treated with natural remedies that are generally safer than commercially-prepared treatments and prescription medicines. Strong fungicides, though generally effective in eliminating fungus can have adverse side effects which can range from simple allergic reactions to nausea and gastric pains. Prolonged use of oral medications can even lead to damage of the liver and kidneys.
